Creating Proper Fitting Dentures to Prevent Breakage and Cracking

If you recently had a variety of teeth extracted, you may be wondering what the next step of the denture process is. When creating proper fitting dentures that prevent breaking and cracking, there are a variety of steps a prosthodontist must follow. After all, the last thing you want is a set of dentures that irritate your gums or make it difficult to eat or speak. Take a look at what goes into making a sturdy pair of dentures.

What are dentures?

Dentures are removable or fixed false teeth that can benefit people who have lost some or all of their teeth. This happens with periodontal disease and other oral ailments that cause the teeth or roots to decay. Over time, these damaged teeth have to be removed. Many people choose partial or full dentures so they can continue eating, speaking and living with ease.

Full dentures are designed to restore missing teeth and affected bone. A partial denture is designed for patients who still have some of their natural teeth. In most cases, partial dentures are anchored to the remaining natural teeth using caps or implants. Implants allow prosthetic teeth to connect to a patient’s jawbone and offer a snug and secure fit. Every denture wearer’s mouth is different. The decision on which type of denture to get should always be discussed between patients and dentists on a case to case basis.

How dentures are made

When fabricating a set of dentures, dentists and prosthodontists must take many factors into account. First, it must be established what type of dentures will be made. Once that is established, a patient will meet with their general dentist to have a preliminary impression made, often with wax. This impression is important because it will be used to help make a diagnostic cast from a stone-like material called gypsum.

Once the impression is made, it will be sent to a dental lab. Once in the lab, the mold will be sprayed with a releasing agent and then filled with a resin, which is typically an acrylic material. The releasing agent makes it easy for the prosthodontist to remove the hardened acrylic from the mold. Once the mold is sufficiently filled with resin, it is heated to harden the resin. This process alone may take upward of eight hours.

When the mold is cooled off, it will be broken to remove the denture. From there, the prosthodontist will inspect the denture and use a file to smooth away any rough spots. When complete, the denture will be sent back to the dentist to present to the patient. During the fitting stage, the general dentist will make sure the denture fits in the patient’s mouth and that the bite is good. If the denture is removable, the patient will be able to leave with it from there. However, if implants are involved, additional steps will have to be carried out, including drilling holes in the patient’s mouth for anchoring the implants.
