Gum Problems and a Toothache

Due to the pain, you want to avoid a toothache and any problems with your gums. The solution is to focus on both as part of daily oral hygiene. That means you need to brush and floss after you eat, regardless of how many times a day. Also, you need to visit a dental clinic every six months. Remember, if you have an issue, do not wait to schedule an appointment.

Not everyone realizes a toothache and gum disease often go hand in hand. This is why taking proper care of both is so important. Just a few minutes a day will make a huge difference. For one thing, good oral hygiene prevents issues. For another, it gives most people a beautiful smile.

Factors that contribute to a toothache

Proper oral hygiene is essential. To drive this point home, people need to understand what can happen with improper care. To start with, decay, also known as a cavity, is the most common cause of toothache. Whether due to wear and tear or improper hygiene, this exposes the roots. The result is pain that ranges from minor to severe.

However, decay is not the only reason that people suffer from a toothache. For instance, infection is another cause. This commonly involves an abscess. Along with pain, this type of infection leads to inflammation of the gums. Therefore, people struggle to eat as biting down becomes almost impossible.

Even a broken tooth can cause a toothache. Sometimes, this happens because an individual grinds their teeth. However, it is also caused by an injury. For instance, this is something that dentists often see when a person falls off a bike. By hitting the mouth on a hard surface, an individual could fracture a tooth. In this case, the pain is usually severe and throbbing.

While these are typically what dentists see when patients visit a dental clinic, other things can cause a toothache. Many people do not realize that a sinus infection, heart attack, and cluster headache are all culprits. The same thing can happen if someone develops shingles, has diabetes, or struggles with alcohol or drug abuse. Even a deficiency of vitamin B12 can lead to a toothache.

Factors that contribute to gum problems

As with a toothache, anyone who develops a gum problem should visit a dental clinic. Since the issue could be minor or major, a person does not want to wait to get treatment. Now, for someone with sensitive gums, flossing and a soft-bristled toothbrush work well. The goal is to clean the mouth gently to prevent the gums from bleeding.

As for the various causes of gum problems, gingivitis ranks at the top of the list. This causes pain, redness, and inflammation. Also, the gums typically bleed when brushing. Periodontitis is another cause of gum problems. As an oral disease, it affects the soft tissue. However, periodontitis can also impact the teeth, as well as bone.

Like a toothache, several factors contribute to gum problems. One example, smoking or using other tobacco products. For someone who chews or uses snuff, dentists often see patients with receding gums. The other issue is that all tobacco products increase the risk of oral cancer.

Preventing a toothache and gum problems with proper oral hygiene

To prevent a toothache and avoid gum problems, adopt a good oral hygiene routine. That alone will help reduce the number of visits you make to a dental clinic. Even so, things happen. So, if you experience pain, suffer an injury, or notice that your gums bleed, contact your dentist.
